Developing People for 21st Century Paper Mills

Papermaking #01
FOCUS
Developed in close cooperation with experts from the mills and educational centres for the Paper industry in Europe (Gernsbach, Steyrermühl and VAPA + Stora Enso, SCA, Smurfit Kappa, Mondi and Sappi), FOCUS modules are based on competence profiles for Machine operators in Stock preparation, Paper machines and Finishing machines.

All 23 Dutch paper & board mills (4500 employees) have been using the FOCUS modules for half a year now. The companies involved are Sappi, Norske Skog, SCA, Smurfit Kappa and Stora Enso

In Germany and Austria the focus modules are integrated in a distance learning program for production managers.

In the UK selected elements from several modules are being tested out on our Machineman Development Programme, see below.

The FOCUS modules are designed for incorporation into blended learning solutions and are offered on a licence-fee basis and priced according to your number of employees and the duration of your licence.

With approximately 30 DVDs to choose from (20 covering papermaking and 10 for corrugated packaging manufacture), you can pick and mix the modules to suit yourself.

To have a quick preview, go to www.focustraining.eu. If you would like a demo DVD or to discuss a demonstration please please email Tim or call me on 07834 712092 .

Machineman Development Programme
In today's papermaking industry people are expected to operate their processes with a very high degree of technical and scientific precision and achieve optimal levels of overall equipment effectiveness.

Participants and companies will benefit from a deeper understanding of the science and technology of papermaking leading to greater efficiency, improved quality awareness and cost control. Critically the participants will appreciate the impact of cause and effect on their processes and be able to troubleshoot with greater competence and confidence.

In August '10 we will be concluding the fifth series of the Machineman Development Programme (MDP), now in its third year. We are delighted to have worked with over forty people from ten mills during this time. Photos of participants from previous courses may be viewed at the Gallery on Steve Mann's website.

Its popularity has grown with its reputation for delivering a significant benefit to participants and mills alike.

MDP6 commences in September 2010. Early bookings are strongly recommended.

Papermaking #03
Papermachine Simulator
The Papermachine Simulator, one of a family of simulators known collectively as CAPS, brings the challenge of setting up and efficiently running the papermachine direct to your PC, no matter where you are – whether at home, the workplace or the training room. It allows trainees to develop competence, confidence and understanding of the papermaking process.

This state-of-the-art software has been developed by papermaking and training experts and provides a complete and realistic simulation of the papermaking process from mixing chest to reel-up. All the stages of the process are covered; stock blending, stock approach, formation, pressing and drying; with vacuum and steam/condensate control included as well. It is realistic, just like being in front of the computer screens found in machine control rooms around the world.

Investment in the Simulator is quickly returned as potentially costly operating errors are
greatly reduced.
